Biographical Information
Romi Sloboda is an Korean-American artist. She spent her childhood living in and navigating between the two cultures of the United States and her mother's native country, South Korea. Sloboda received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the London Metropolitan University School of Art, Architecture and Design, and her Bachelor of FIne Arts degree from the School of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Her work has been shown internationally, including at invitational print biennials and triennials, and been exhibited at several museums including the Columbus Museum of Art in Georgia; the Hawaii State Art Museum; the State Museum of Pennsylvania; and the the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts.
A recipient of a residency fellowship from the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, she has also been awarded artist residencies at CentralTrak: University of Texas in Dallas, and at Herekeke in Lama, New Mexico.
Sloboda has also received professional grants from the Leeway Foundation of Philadelphia, an award from the St. Louis chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, and recognized by the St. Louis Artists’ Guild and St. Louis chapter of the Women’s Caucus for the Arts.
In addition to her studio work, Romi has volunteered with non-profit civic and cultural organizations and, in partnership with her late husband artist Chip Dunahugh, also worked on the design, remodeling and renovations of historic, contemporary and commercial properties in St. Louis, Philadelphia, Colorado and Santa Fe. She currently lives and works in London, UK.
